$210.00

5 WEEK SESSION • Monday Evenings • 6:00pm - 7:30pm

May 6th, 13th, 20th & June 3rd, 17th

Classes are held at The Art Room at 309 Penn Avenue in Downtown Scranton. All classes are taught by me, Jamie Durkin, owner of Vecina.

Class size is limited to 8 people and are designed to start at 12 years old.

You will be provided with a JUKI home machine for all classes. If you have your own machine, please let me know as soon as possible so we can discuss the condition and capabilities of your machine.

Sewing 101 is a 5-part series designed specifically for beginners. Class includes 7.5 hours of instruction. This class is perfect for anyone who has a little or no sewing experience as well as those who have not sewn for years and needs a good refresher.

The goal of the class is to have everyone become comfortable with the machine, learn how to sew and learn techniques that you can build upon for your sewing journey! It's a learning class and not just a project-based class.

Considering we are making projects – I want them to be fashionable and functional and something you will be very proud of using. You will learn techniques of how to make your projects look professional and not homemade. I will also share production tips and tricks I have learned from years in the industry.

Students provide sewing tools and most materials.

Tools: You will need just the basics to help keep the cost low. You will need some sort of cutting scissors or shears. Please buy new ones, they will make your life so much easier. I will also show you how to use a rotary cutter with a self healing pad. You will need to provide pins and or clips. I also have a variety of rulers and tape measures to use. If you have your own, please bring them too.

I will cover different ways to cut in Class 1 and you can decide what you would like to purchase to start cutting in Class 2.

Materials: You will need to provide certain materials for your projects and I will provide some for others, this is to keep it simpler for you and save you time and maybe a little frustration!

TRIANGLE BAG: You will provide the fabric. The sample I made is in linen, it's very drapey and has a beautiful look. Linen is a little tricky to sew for a beginner, but I wanted to show you the possibilities! Other fabrics that would work well are any type of cotton, solids or fun prints, a soft canvas, lightweight denim, and corduroy. Depending on the width of the fabric you will need just under 2 yards for the outside and the same for the lining.

HEADBAND: You will provide the fabric. I will supply the hair elastics. This sample is linen as well. Good fabric choices are also any cotton solids or prints. Depending on the width of the fabric just over 1/4 yard is required.

ZIPPER POUCH: I will provide the canvas the sample is made of, and I will also provide the zipper, however, you can choose your color! The lining is up to you, I will have the same fabric in the photo available (for purchase for a nominal 'scrap price') or you can shop for your own. This lining is made of linen backed with fusible interfacing so it's easier to sew. We will go over yardage requirements in the first class. I will provide the fusible interfacing if necessary.

Patterns: I will make the patterns and they will be provided for the projects. They will be yours to keep after the session. Learning how to read commercial patterns will be taught in Sewing 102.

Fabric Sourcing:  Part of the first-night curriculum will be a 30 minute jammed-pack sourcing session. I will walk you through all my top online choices for you to buy materials for your projects. I will share my sources with you and they will include different price ranges and different styling so you can pick what truly suits your personality. We will cover all the materials you will need to purchase for the class series. Local shopping at Joanne's has excellent fabric choices too!

CLASS 1: We jump right in, I will teach you how to thread your machine, wind a bobbin, and use the stitch selector. You will start sewing straight lines and corners, back tacking, making seams, and top-stitching. I will provide you with practice fabric. Then there is sourcing time so you’ll learn so much more about fabric, print direction, picking a lining vs exterior fabric, and fusible interfacing.

CLASS 2: Twisted Fabric Headband - You will learn to sew a twisted fabric headband using all the techniques you have learned so far. We will also cover the importance of pressing while sewing, which is also part of the art form of creating a beautiful, finished product. Laying out the pattern and learning about fabric terminology will be discussed.

CLASS 3: Triangle Bag - We will start the triangle bag and it will probably take more than Class 3 to finish; we will finish it in Class 4.

CLASS 4: Zipper Pouch - We will work on finishing the triangle bag and will start the zipper pouch. The pouch will be fully lined and will have a metal zipper. We will learn how to set a zipper with a "zipper foot", which will be provided.

CLASS 5: We will finish strong with the most difficult project, the canvas zipper pouch. Congratulations! If there is additional time during the last class we will have an open teaching, learning, question and answer session. Ask me about a new project that you would like to start!

CANCELLATION POLICY: If you are unable to attend, I can provide you with a credit of $210 that you can use toward future sewing classes. It will only be provided if you notify me 72 hours in advance by emailing hello@vecinadesign.com. There must also be a waitlist for the class so that I can fill your spot. By registering for the class, you are agreeing to this cancellation policy.
